Safe Pool Practices

  • Install a 4-foot or higher fence around the pool with self-latching gates.

  • Use pool covers and alarms to prevent unsupervised access.

  • Have lifesaving equipment nearby, such as a life ring, shepherd’s hook, and first aid kit.

  • Always have an adult actively supervising when children are in or around the pool.

  • Designate a Water Watcher—someone responsible for keeping an eye on swimmers at all times.

  • Never rely on floaties or pool toys as a substitute for life jackets or supervision.

  • Establish and enforce pool rules (no running, no diving in shallow areas, no rough play).

  • Ensure non-swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets.

  • Keep electrical devices and cords away from the pool area.

  • Teach swimmers to stay away from drains and suction outlets to avoid entrapment.
