Using an AED

  • If a person is unresponsive and not breathing, or only gasping, CPR is necessary.

  • Always call 911 before starting CPR.

  • If an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is available, use it as soon as possible.

  • Check for responsiveness – Tap the person and shout, "Are you okay?"

  • Call for help – If unresponsive, call 911 and get an AED if available.

  • Check for breathing – Look, listen, and feel for 5–10 seconds. If not breathing, begin CPR.

  • Start chest compressions:

    • Place both hands (one on top of the other) in the center of the chest, just below the nipple line.

    • Push hard and fast (at least 2 inches deep) at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute (to the beat of "Stayin’ Alive").

    • Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.

  • Give rescue breaths:

    • Tilt the head back and lift the chin.

    • Pinch the nose.

    • Give two breaths, just enough to make the chest rise.

  • Continue CPR – Do not stop until emergency personnel arrive or the person starts breathing.

  • Check for responsiveness – Tap the infant’s foot and shout their name.

  • Call for help – If no response, call 911 and get an AED if available.

  • Check for breathing – Look, listen, and feel for 5–10 seconds. If no breathing, start CPR.

  • Start chest compressions:

    • Use the thumbs in the center of the infant’s chest, just below the nipple line.

    • Push about 1.5 inches deep at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute.

    • Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.

  • Give rescue breaths:

    • Tilt the head to a neutral position.

    • Cover the infant’s nose and mouth with your mouth.

    • Give two gentle breaths, just enough to make the chest rise.

  • Continue CPR – Do not stop until emergency personnel arrive or the person starts breathing.
