Using an AED
-
If a person is unresponsive and not breathing, or only gasping, CPR is necessary.

Always call 911 before starting CPR.

If an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is available, use it as soon as possible.

-
Check for responsiveness – Tap the person and shout, "Are you okay?"
-
Call for help – If unresponsive, call 911 and get an AED if available.
-
Check for breathing – Look, listen, and feel for 5–10 seconds. If not breathing, begin CPR.
-
Start chest compressions:
-
Place both hands (one on top of the other) in the center of the chest, just below the nipple line.
-
Push hard and fast (at least 2 inches deep) at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute (to the beat of "Stayin’ Alive").
-
Allow the chest to fully recoil between compressions.
-
-
Give rescue breaths:
-
Tilt the head back and lift the chin.
-
Pinch the nose.
-
Give two breaths, just enough to make the chest rise.
-
-
Continue CPR – Do not stop until emergency personnel arrive or the person starts breathing.
