Never swim alone!

Walk around the pool; do not run.

Play safely—no pushing or rough play.

Non-swimmers should stay in shallow water or wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved lifejacket.

Holding breath underwater for long periods is dangerous and not allowed.

Diving is only permitted in designated deep areas.
-
Lifeguard stands and emergency equipment are for lifeguard use only.

Keep the area around lifeguard stations clear.

Swim lessons are important as it decreases the likelihood of drowning as well as build confidence around the water.

Early goals of swim lessons are to learn these skills:

Jump, Push, Turn, Grab

Jump into the water, push off the bottom, turn to face the wall, and grab it to exit safely.

Swim, Float, Swim
-
Swim forward, roll onto the back to float and rest, then roll back to swim again until reaching safety.

Always supervise children in and around water.

Reinforce pool safety rules.

Encourage children to trust you and their instructors when learning water skills.

Be patient—children learn at their own pace.

If possible, take first aid and CPR classes.

Know how to respond to an emergency: alert a lifeguard, throw a buoyant object, and call 911.
-
Be mindful that your fears of water can transfer to your children.
